In 2007, while I was a 2000+ pound man, I had 20 years worth of health problems that were doing me in. I was depressed to the point of suicide, terrified of what I would be like in 20 years and utterly miserable with life at the age of 53. I didn’t want to live. The first step was to get a handle on my health and life situation. I started with the most important thing on my mind – my weight. In January of 2008, I started working out with a personal trainer and dietician. In the first 18 months, I lost 100 lbs. In the last 18 months, I have lost another 20+ lbs. I now weigh 280 lbs. I am absolutely living proof that

EveryVoiceCenter was founded by a mother to help people like her son John. John was morbidly obese, unhealthy and unhappy. He had tried everything to lose weight, from diet pills to gastric bypass surgery. However, the results were always the same and he would eventually gain back all of the weight he lost, or more.

John Cassarino is an avid runner and weight loss coach, and he has lost over 100 pounds.  He is the founder and President of EveryVoiceAgency, an organization that provides coaching for people who are looking to lose weight.  He is also currently a member of the  National Coaching Council, and is a member of the  National Weight Loss Leadership Council, and the  American Council on Exercise. His coaching style and expertise has been featured in the Huffington Post, LA Times, and AskMen.  Recently, he was a guest on Nightline and on the Dr. Oz show.

John Romkey worked on his mind for years but never gave his physique a second consideration. He joined Coaching at the age of 46 after battling with weight issues and emotional eating since he was a teenager. He tipped the scales at 331 pounds.

He shed nearly 100 pounds in 16 months with the aid of Coaching, close friends, and family. This is the story of his life.

The Transformation of John

The end: a fresh start

John Romkey is currently lounging in an office chair in his lovely New Hampshire home, 100 pounds lighter than when he first began coaching 16 months ago. He has a nice home, a wonderful partner, and wonderful friends.

He is 47 years old and has a wonderful life.

He will graduate from the coaching program that changed his life in only a few weeks, the program that allowed him to sit comfortably in a movie theater, fly without using a seatbelt extender, and ride a bike for the first time in 30 years.

So, how does he feel about going it alone and leaving Coaching behind? He considers it a strange question.

While Coaching provided him with the tools to be in shape — eating habits, workouts, and coaching — it was up to him to follow through with any of them. He claims that finishing the program will have no effect on his habits or motivation.

It’ll only serve to further ingrain it all into his everyday routine.

Month 14: Developing a passion for training and exercise

He could be the only man on the planet who enjoys Bulgarian Split Squats, a grueling workout that challenges your patience as well as your balance and muscle endurance. And that’s exactly what he’s doing right now at the gym, with one knee on the floor and the other on the bench, crouching and standing up with ease.

He had to grab on to a pole to keep his balance when he initially started. His range of motion was so limited that he didn’t even appear to be moving.

John, on the other hand, has dropped the pole and is now performing split squats while holding dumbbells. He’s lowering the tempo. He’s getting a sweltering. He’s having a great time right now.

When did he become this person?

Month 11: Coping with a constantly changing clothing

John just has one pair of jeans in his closet. He’s simply lost too much weight to maintain up with his clothes. In the first few months, he moved from a 3XL to a 2XL. After that, I went from 2XL to XL. Now, depending on the clothing and who produced it, he’s wearing a Large or even a Medium.

It’s fortunate that he works from home. If he had to show up somewhere every day with a suit and tie, it would be murder on his wallet. He is, however, in need of fresh clothing. He’ll be down a few more pounds in a few more months. After that, he’ll go shopping for something special.

However, he’s currently standing in front of his closet, pondering, “What should I wear today?”

John, it’s simple. Simply put on your one pair of jeans and get ready for the day.

Month 8: Grocery Store Creativity

Here’s a quick guide to navigating the supermarket: Keep to the outskirts. In the middle, you’ll find all the processed foods like chips, cookies, spaghetti, sauces, and dressings. Vegetables, meats, eggs, and fruits are kept on the exterior of the store, away from the aisles. This is something John learnt when he first started coaching eight months ago, and he puts it into practice every time he goes shopping.

The cart he wheels weaves in and out of the produce like it’s on a one-way track, stopping every now and then for John to pick up an avocado or an apple, test its integrity with his fingers, and then trash or retain it.

When he arrives to the meat area, his eyes light up, and he checks the shelves like a modern hunter for free-range chicken. He ponders, “Where do my taste buds wish to travel today?”

Perhaps India. India would be wonderful.

So he grabs his chicken, which has been expertly wrapped in paper by the man behind the counter, and heads to the spice rack to get turmeric, coriander, and cumin.

John is putting in a lot of effort in the gym to get slimmer.

Month 6: What does it mean to be moderate?

He only requires one fry. There’s only one.

John is out to dinner with his friends, and he’s about to swipe a fry off someone’s plate. They’re attempting to persuade him to eat more by handing him a tiny platter of fries.

John, on the other hand, is adamant. There’s only one. Really.

He takes it and eats it, crispy golden brown and flaky. He returns to his salad, salmon, and steamed vegetables after that. But here’s the thing: John isn’t in the mood for another fried. He’s had enough of the fries. He’s completely fried. He also doesn’t have to stop himself from removing a couple more items from his friend’s to-do list.

This is a rather new phenomenon.

He wasn’t sure if he could get acclimated to this “type” of eating when he first started Coaching, scared that he’d get passed over the first time someone next to him ordered the burger and fries, lasagna, or the peanut butter brownie ice cream thing. But now he prefers healthy cuisine and enjoys ordering fancy salads and lean steak cuts.

Don’t get me wrong: he’s a great guy. He can still enjoy a good slice of apple pie, but only on rare occasions, and only if it’s baked with love.

Even then, he might prefer the taste of fresh watermelon.

Month 3: I think I’ll be able to pull this off.

Here’s a guy who went to MIT, worked as a coding pioneer when the Internet was still known as the ARPANET, and now works from home.

Every time he logs into the online Coaching program, which is still very new to him, the geek emerges.

He adores the software and the way it keeps track of his development. There are graphs, buttons, and data entry locations to click on. But the best part is yet to come. It demonstrates his near-perfect program adherence.

Complete adherence to the habit. Workout compliance was at 98 percent. There was a 99 percent compliance rate with the assignment.

He knew he was going to take the program seriously when he signed up for it. But he had no idea he had it in him.

He weighs in at 297 pounds. It’s the first time in decades that he’s surpassed the 300-pound mark.

Month 1: Making the decision to make a change

That is all there is to it. Enough.

For crying out loud, he’s 331 pounds. It’s past time to bring things under control and take action. He’s fed up with being chubby. He’s sick of feeling like this all of the time. He discussed the program with his trainer the day before yesterday. I explained what it was all about and how it worked to her. She placed her hand on his shoulder and expressed her support.

T-minus 24 months till the start of coaching

Bonnie and John are working on their balance in the gym.

His coach is Bonnie. When he first started working out, when his anxiety got the best of him and he thought everyone was criticizing him, she was his first line of defense against the rest of the gym. Bonnie, on the other hand, made him feel at ease right away.

He first came to her with knee pain a year ago and has been working with her ever since. He’s lost 30 pounds, down from 355 to 325 pounds.

She’s an excellent trainer as well as a nice friend.

T-minus 48 months until the start of coaching

His doctor is taken aback. John’s cholesterol and blood pressure are both within normal limits, which is unusual for someone of his size. Even so, he tells John that being this huge and out of shape isn’t good for him. It’ll all catch up to you eventually.

This, however, is insufficient to frighten John. He considers himself to be in good health. In a way. He is well aware that he is overweight. You’d have to be deafeningly deafeningly deafeningly deafeningly de However, it’s all too simple to close your eyes and forget about how you look.

John leaves his doctor’s office without a solid weight-loss strategy. He has no reason to. He appears to be in good health.

Choose a day in any year between 1985 and 2009 and consider what John Romkey is up to.

He’s probably sitting on his couch, his laptop lying on his stomach, because he’s too obese to sit at a desk comfortably. Take Homer Simpson, boost his IQ by 100 points, give him an MIT degree, and replace his beer with loose-leaf tea, and you’ve got John Romkey in his twenties, thirties, and early forties.

He’s intelligent, thoughtful, and considerate. She’s a true sweetheart.

But John has a weight problem that he has struggled with for practically his entire life, and he is unsure how to address it.

Before Coaching, John was hanging out with some pals.

The first steps
